West Ham United may have moved closer to appointing Julen Lopetegui as manager after positive talks with David Sullivan, according to HITC.
The Spaniard has been rumoured with taking over from David Moyes in the dugout as manager of the Hammers in the summer.
Graeme Bailey has reported for HITC (26 April) that talks have taken place between the Spaniard and Sullivan and the chairman was left impressed.
Despite influence from West Ham technical director, Tim Steitden Lopetegui is “distinctly more likely” to become manager at the London Stadium.
Will Julen Lopetegui be better than David Moyes at West Ham?
There is no doubt of the success that Moyes has had at West Ham in his two spells considering where he picked up the job.
He took over first in November 2017 on a short-term contract and took the Hammers from the relegation zone to a 13th-place finish.
Moyes returned to London Stadium in December 2019 and once again helped secure Premier League safety.
The following season saw him secure a sixth-place finish. The season after saw them reach a European semi-final and qualify for the Conference League.
Last season Moyes guided his side to the Conference League final and won to secure a European trophy. A memorable night in Prague.
Even this season the Hammers sit in eighth in the Premier League and are only two points behind Newcastle United in seventh. They also reached the Europa League quarter-finals and were knocked out by an unbeaten Bayer Leverkusen side.
Although some fans don’t like the style of football, Moyes has done so much good at West Ham that will take a lot to live up to.
Lopetegui has a pedigree from his time as Real Madrid and Sevilla manager but will have to do a lot to meet Moyes’ legacy.
In other West Ham news, Vincent Kompany’s name has been mentioned with regards to the Hammers’ job.
