Coventry City set for memorable match against United

Victory at Wembley would see the Sky Blues reach the FA Cup final for the first time since the club famously lifted the trophy in 1987.

Ahead of the big match, lets take a look back at five memorable matches between the two clubs including City’s win en route to the FA Cup final and some Darren Huckerby magic at Highfield Road.

Mifsud Stuns Old Trafford

The name Michael Mifsud might not be familiar to many football fans but the Maltese striker has cult-hero status in the city of Coventry.

City, then playing in the Championship, took on Sir Alex Ferguson’s all-conquering Manchester United team in the third round of the League Cup back in the 2007/08 campaign.

Many expected the reigning Premier League champions to claim a routine win but Coventry and Mifsud had other ideas.

The striker turned home Michael Doyle’s cross on 27 minutes to break the deadlock and silence the Old Trafford crowed.

And the Malta international produced a clinical finish on 70 minutes to send the 11,000 travelling Sky Blues supporters into delirium and seal a famous victory.

United’s team featured future World Cup and Champions League winner Gerard Pique and Portugal international Nani while Michael Carrick was deployed from the bench.
