Josh Tymon puts Swansea in panic ahead of Stoke City reunion

Josh Tymon is being assessed by Swansea over a calf injury ahead of Wednesday’s crunch match against his old club Stoke City.

The 24-year-old has emerged as an increasingly key figure since a change in the dug out at Swansea and arrival of Luke Williams as manager in January. He has played in 36 league matches, mostly at left-back, and chipped in with five assists as they battle to claw their way to Championship mid-table and safety.

But he limped off with a calf injury in the first-half of Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Middlesbrough and has a race against time to be ready for a double header at home against Stoke then Rotherham.

Williams said: “I think it was a contact injury as he got kicked, so hopefully it is not a ligament injury or anything like this.

“He is tough, so I hope he is going to come back really quick. He is a guy who we miss a lot when he is not on the pitch.”

Tymon joined Swansea from Stoke for about £2m back in August but was only really used if the team was playing wing-backs under Michael Duff.

But Gareth Vincent writes for the BBC: “As the season has gone on, however, Tymon has proved well capable of playing left-back rather than in a slightly more advanced wing-back role.

“So successful has the former Hull youngster been, in fact, that he is likely to be in with a shout when Swansea fans vote for their player of the season.”

Midfielder Azeem Abdulai, centre-back Bashir Humphreys and right-back Josh Key are on standby to fill in as emergency left-back if Tymon is not passed fit.

An update is expected on Joe Allen, the former Stoke captain, who suffered a toe injury during a defeat to Queens Park Rangers on Easter Monday.

“He bent the toe back too far. The toe said ouch and then he cannot play any more in the game, so we’ll see,” Williams said last week. “We need a bit more time for that to settle down and we will try to gauge how long that will be. I don’t think he is showing the symptoms of a break. Hopefully that won’t be the end of his season.”

Allen, aged 34, has only made six league starts so far this season, plus another 13 appearances from the bench.

Stoke are also sweating on striker Ryan Mmaee ahead of their trip to South Wales.
