PSR is the new buzzword on the block it seems, and it’s nice to know from a West Ham United perspective that we’re not in any immediate danger of falling foul of the new rules.
West Ham are not one of the clubs currently under investigation for flouting PSR, or ‘profit and sustainability rules’.
Formerly known as FFP (financial fair play), PSR is now being used to crack down on Premier League clubs who have been spending beyond their means.
Hammers boss David Moyes has been smart with his spending, and he has of course been helped out by the £105 million sale of Declan Rice to Arsenal last summer. So we can watch on whilst the others sweat it out.
Football finance expert Kieran Maguire recently told Hammers News that we’re actually in pretty good shape regarding PSR:
“As far as the new rules are concerned for West Ham, I don’t think it will make a significant amount of difference. And the reason why I say that is that the owners weren’t particularly keen on taking the club close to the limit because they wanted to try to run it in a more sustainable manner. And clearly looking at my projections, they would not be in a fantastic position with regards to PSR. But my calculations are very crude because I’m looking at historic data and I’ve had to make a few assumptions. Remember West Ham this season are in the Europa League so have got the benefit of extra money coming in from that and they’ve got the sale of Declan Rice – that would go into the calculations as well.”
Now, it seems like the Hammers could be ready to take advantage of another Premier League club’s current financial woes…
The Hammers have been looking hard for a proper replacement for Michail Antonio for quite some time now.
The 33-year-old is so crucial to the system that Moyes deploys and without him, we really struggle at times.
The Scot has tried and failed to make different strikers work in his system, including the likes of Sebastien Haller and Gianluca Scamacca.
However, this time it seems like Moyes is lining up a move for someone who is absolutely perfect to pick up the mantle from Mick.
According to Soccernet Nigeria, Taiwo Awoniyi of Nottingham Forest is a transfer target for West Ham this summer.
And what’s more, Forest could be forced into selling the 26-year-old striker for around £24 million in order to comply with the strict new guidelines for profit and sustainability rules (PSR).
The East Midlands outfit have already been docked four points after falling foul of the new profit and sustainability rules, and there could be further punishment on the way for them.
West Ham’s own PSR fears have been eased after we pocketed a £13 million bonus from our exploits in the Europa League this season.
Awoniyi has 17 goals and four assists to his names in 50 games in all competitions for the Reds (Transfermarkt). However, his game is based about so much more than just scoring goals.
The way that he occupies defenders and runs the channels, his brute strength and powerful running ability makes him perfect for Moyes’s system at the London Stadium. He is a constant menace to his opponents, and for £24 million, we really can’t go wrong.
West Ham may well soon reap the rewards of sticking to PSR guidelines, at the cost of one of our Premier League rivals.
