FINALLY: Fábio Tavares made his long-awaited return to action

Fábio Tavares made his long-awaited return to action earlier today, when he started for the Under-21s against Peterborough United.

Tavares suffered a severe injury back in January of this year and he has been on the road to recovery ever since, preparing for his time to come back into the fold.

Months in the gym and working on the grass on his own led to a comeback match at the Alan Higgs Centre, his first competitive fixture since that FA Cup tie against Wrexham at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

Speaking after marking his return to action, the striker provided an update on his fitness and the next steps for him in his rehabilitation.

Making his return against Peterborough United Under-21s…

“Unbelievable feeling to be back. Obviously, we didn’t win today. But it’s a positive day for me on a personal note, I’ve been back after a long few months.

“The last few weeks we’ve just kind of been waiting for an opportunity to get me back in and get involved.

“It’s just good to be back out there. I got an assist, and I had a few chances, one came back off the post.

“I would have liked to have gotten a goal but just being involved was the main positive today.”

When he found out about his return…

“A couple weeks ago, to be fair, we’ve been looking at this date. I was only initially supposed to play 45, so to push through to 60 is another big bonus as well.”

Building on this return to action…

“I just want to keep trying to get as much minutes as I can really in the Under-21s, or any other opportunities I can do.

“I’ve completed 60 today so it’s just kind of seeing when’s the next opportunity to get involved or on the bench for the first team.

“There’s a lot of games coming up, so hopefully I can just manage to be on the bench like I said and come on and you know, anything can happen from there, so I’ve just got to keep trying to be positive.

“I can’t wait to be back in front of the Sky Blue Army and any opportunity I get I will definitely be pushing for it.”
