Done deal: why Koppen agree terms with Rangers 2 January

The Gers announced in a statement on their website on Friday (1 December) that the 38-year-old will join the club on 2 January from PSV Eindhoven, where he was previously Head of Scouting.

It added that he will be tasked with ensuring the Light Blues have a “thriving player trading model” as well as leading the recently revamped scouting setup at the Rangers Training Centre.

“I am delighted to be joining such a prestigious club like Rangers in what is a crucial role for the club’s forward strategy,” said Koppen. “The Chairman and CEO have both been clear in recent times our player trading model has to function better and on a more regular basis.

“I look forward to working with the scouting team already here at the club to ensure we reach our goals in the coming years.”

This is yet another indication that Rangers are making progressive moves behind the scenes to try and improve their recruitment over the coming years.

Koppen previously held a high-profile role at PSV, where it was clear to see in their game against the Gers earlier this season that they have brought in some excellent players.

The appointment marks the completion of the “men’s football board”, which will oversee some of the biggest decisions to be made at Ibrox and includes chairman John Bennett as well as manager Philippe Clement.

The board have made it clear that they want to sign younger players that could bring in a profit in the future, an area Koppen will be looking to provide his expertise on moving forward.

The Light Blues will be hoping that model can bring them success on the pitch while also ensuring they can go about their business in a sustainable manner.

Rangers have agreed terms with Nils Koppen to become the club’s new Director of Football Recruitment, subject to a work permit being granted.
