Giants Tell Drew Lock He Has a Chance to Win Starting QB Job for 2024

As a team that plays in a huge sports market, the New York Giants must always find a way to become relevant in the NFL. Any team that has New York emblazoned on their chest is expected to play to the best of their ability.

The pressure to succeed is one of the reasons why the Giants decided to trade for Drew Lock in the offseason. He’s shown plenty of growth since he was cast off the Seattle Seahawks and is capable enough to settle in as a backup.

However, his future with the team is still not set in stone.

Drew Lock is challenged by the New York Giants to fight for the starting QB role
Matt Hladik of The Spun reported that the second-round selection of the 2019 Draft might look like he was brought in as a backup to Daniel Jones, but the team provided him with an assurance that will give him an incentive to play better:

According to Giants beat writer Dan Duggan of The Athletic, Schneider said Lock, who spent the last two seasons in Seattle, was told by New York that he’ll have the opportunity to compete to be QB1.

“Seahawks GM John Schneider said on Seattle radio show @WymanAndBob that he wanted to keep Drew Lock, but the Giants ‘basically sold him on the opportunity to compete to be the starter,’” Duggan wrote. “Schneider said that Lock views this situation with the Giants as possibly being similar to Baker Mayfield in Tampa last year.”

Will Lock be able to steal the starting QB job from Danny Dimes?
The New York Giants decided to make a bet on Drew Lock for the quality he showcased during the period Geno Smith was injured last season. While he only started two games out of the four he played in last season, he managed to get 543 passing yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions on a decent 63.2 pass completion rate and a respectable 81.2 QB rating.

If he manages to steal the starting position from Daniel Jones and play fantastic football in the NFC East, he can easily become the next Baker Mayfield.
