21-year-old may really wish he joined Leeds

Leeds United did not feel their squad was in much need of reinforcements in January.

Daniel Farke’s priority was to strengthen the full-back positions and though heading into the window it was on the left where Leeds were looking, it was the other flank where the only addition was made.

After losing Djed Spence and Luke Ayling, Leeds brought in Connor Roberts as their replacement on deadline day, as he joined on loan for the rest of the season from Burnley.

Leeds were also linked with several left-backs but the form and fitness of Junior Firpo meant they did not need one. One of the names mentioned as a potential target was Josh Doig.

Doig had been at Hellas Verona but was interesting the likes of Leeds, Marseille and Sassuolo, and after a move to the French side fell through, he joined the latter.

Doig could regret not joining Leeds

Since moving to Sassuolo, Doig has made eight appearances and yet it was only on Saturday that he got his first taste of victory at his new club.

Sassuolo lost six of his first seven appearances, conceding 19 goals in the process, including a defeat against his former side Verona earlier this month.

However, he was final able to pick up three points at the weekend against fellow relegation rivals Frosinone with a 1-0 win, though they are still very much at risk of the drop.

They sit 19th in the table on 23 points, two adrift of safety with 10 matches to play. Had he joined Leeds, he may have actually had a better chance of playing top-flight football next season.

Leeds, of course, currently occupy second place in the Championship and are on course to return to the Premier League at the first attempt, if they continue this form.
