The San Francisco 49ers have moved on from one of their 2023 free agent signings, releasing cornerback Isaiah Oliver.
Oliver was signed to a two-year, $6.75 million deal with the 49ers last offseason and was expected to be their starting slot corner.
However, struggles in preseason meant he did not start in that capacity Week 1 and it was only after an injury to Ambry Thomas that he took the role in Week 2, when he made a key interception against the Los Angeles Rams.
But he lost the job again after a dreadful Week 8 display in a loss to the Cincinnati Bengals and did not play a defensive snap during the 49ers’ postseason run to Super Bowl 58.
Referred to as the best nickel in free agency by former defensive coordinator Steve Wilks back in August (h/t 49ers Webzone), Oliver’s release follows Wilks’ firing, which was announced last week after the Niners’ overtime loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Per Over The Cap, Oliver’s departure creates $2.4 million in cap savings and carries a dead money charge of $1.46 million.
