Raiders Hire Rich Scangarello as New Quarterbacks Coach

The Las Vegas Raiders have added yet another former division rival to their organization. According to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, the Raiders have hired former Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello. Pelissero reported that Scangarello had recently been working with former Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams. This will be Scangarello’s second go-around with the Raiders, as he served as an offensive quality control and assistant quarterbacks coach for the 2009 NFL season

Scangarello last served as offensive coordinator for the University of Kentucky for its 2022 season. He was fired just days after the team’s final regular season contest.

Before Kentucky, Scangarello served as quarterbacks coach for the San Francisco 49ers during the 2021 NFL season, where he worked with Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, whom ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported last week is expected to be released by the club before he is owed his bonus. Garoppolo led San Francisco to the NFC Championship game that season, where the 49ers fell to the eventual Super Bowl champions, the Los Angeles Rams. The season prior, Scangarello served as a senior offensive assistant for the Philadelphia Eagles. That stint followed Scangarello’s one-year term as offensive coordinator of the Broncos, who finished 28th in the league in total offensive yards. Before landing that role, Scangarello served his first stint as quarterbacks coach for the 49ers, during the 2017 and 2018 seasons, Garoppolo’s first two seasons in San Francisco.

Prior to joining San Francisco, Scangarello served as offensive coordinator at Wagner College. That was just one of his 18 years coaching college football, including his recent stint at Kentucky.
