I knew Everton were in trouble – I wish their points deduction came while I was still at Leeds

Ex-Leeds United boss Jesse Marsch has given the picture of what he knew about Everton’s poor financial stance while he was at Elland Road.

Former Leeds United manager Jesse Marsch says he was aware of the potential Financial Fair Play trouble Everton were in during his tenure at Elland Road.

The Whites were relegated from the Premier League on the final day of last season after a 4-1 defeat to Tottenham while Everton secured a 1-0 win over Bournemouth to beat the drop as Leicester City went down to the Championship.

The Toffees had been charged with breaching the Premier League’s Profit & Sustainability rules back in March but were only handed their 10-point penalty in November. Everton are due to discover the outcome of their appeal this week.

The club were separately charged again in January along with Nottingham Forest for breaching cash loss limits. The independent panel hearings for those cases are due to be held before the end of the current season.

As for the original charge, a report from the Daily Mail claimed Leeds along with Leicester and Burnley – relegated two seasons ago – were considering legal action against Everton given their overspending helped them beat the drop at their expense.

Appearing on Sky Sports on Monday, Marsch – sacked in February last year – said he knew of Everton’s financial plight ahead of the Premier League bringing forward charges a month later. He said it “would have been nice” if the points deduction had been sanctioned at the time the Toffees breached the deficit cap.

When asked about Everton’s points deducted and the rumoured legal action from Leeds, Marsch told Sky Sports: “We were aware of some of the Fair Play issues going on at Everton. Obviously Leeds United was a part of the original lawsuit that started to push the button to challenge the status of Everton.

“It’s always hard for any of us to understand exactly what the charges are, what exactly happened. With me and my football club, it was just about focusing on what we could control and performing the best that we could under the circumstances.

“However, obviously looking back, it would have been nice to experience some of those points deductions in the years that they were happening and the years I was at Leeds United.”
