Banners held up in away end demanding change of manager as Hammers beaten at Nottingham Forest
David Moyes came out fighting after frustrated West Ham fans called for him to leave the club, warning: ‘Other managers might have excited you more – but the one sitting here wins more’.
Travelling supporters unveiled a ‘Moyes Out’ banner in the away end after a 2-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest made it eight matches without a win across all competitions since the start of 2024.
Moyes is out of contract at the end of the season and the barren run has prompted fresh uncertainty over his future, with talks over an extension on hold.
The 60-year-old secured his place in West Ham legend when ending the club’s long wait for silverware in last season’s Europa Conference League, but a large section of the club’s fanbase want the Scot replaced by a more progressive manager when his deal expires.
“I’m pretty long in the tooth, it happens and I don’t think you can please everybody,” Moyes said of fans’ dissent.
“I think it would be hard to say there have been many better times at West Ham. Maybe they want something different but if they’re honest I think they probably have to say it’s been as good a time as they’ve had at the club, winning a trophy and the league positions.
“Maybe they’ve had managers who excite them more, possibly, but the one who’s sitting here wins more.”
Taiwo Awoniyi gave Forest the lead deep into first-half stoppage time, before Callum Hudson-Odoi’s late strike secured a deserved victory after Kalvin Phillips had been sent off.
The Hammers will drop to ninth should Brighton win at relegation-threatened Sheffield United on Sunday, with their push for Europe in danger of falling flat.
“We’re hurting really badly as a team and a manager because we’ve not had good results for five or six weeks now,” Moyes added.
“But this season already we’ve beaten Tottenham, Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, so we mustn’t forget there’ve been good times not so long ago.”
