Simon Jordan drops harsh realities after Celtic crash out of Europe

Simon Jordan referenced how Celtic need to be spending more in the transfer market after crashing out of Europe in a sorry way once again.

On Tuesday night, Brendan Rodgers and the Celtic players knew that they faced a must-win game against Lazio.

But, in the end, it was the same cold feeling at the full-time whistle. Another defeat in the Champions League and another loss on the road – Neil Lennon was critical of two Celtic players.

This just isn’t a Brendan Rodgers issue, but the same happened under Ange Postecoglou last season, who ‘everyone loves’, according to Simon Jordan on talkSPORT.

Whilst the former Crystal Palace owner wants Brendan Rodgers to be a ‘better coach’, he did express sympathy towards Celtic bringing in more money than what is going out and how more money needs to be spent.

Not so long ago, the annual financial results for the year ended 30th June 2023 were recently released – and the club has made big profits, with a tad over £70 million in the bank.

Whilst Simon Jordan thinks Celtic, as a whole, can just do better, he did seemingly hint towards more ambition needing to be shown from the top, which is what fans and the man in the dugout want.

Celtic crash out of Europe

“They spent 22 million Euros in the transfer window this year,” said Jordan. “That was the Celtic spend, they sold 30 odd Euros worth of players, so they sold more than they brought in.

With the turnover they have got, I would expect Celtic to be more competitive in Europe than they currently have been in the last two seasons.

“(But), they haven’t spent a great deal of money – give us more money is what he (Rodgers) is saying.

“If you are spending £20 million a season and you are selling £30-odd million worth of players, then ‘if you want me to be more successful in Europe’. I would say ‘be a better coach’.

“But notwithstanding that, be a better coach and, at the same time, be given a little bit more ammunition. One coach, albeit he (Postecoglou) had gone a bit off the boil, but everyone loves, has produced the same rubbish outcome.”

Celtic in the upcoming transfer windows

On the domestic scene, Celtic can go without a few key players and still end up with the three points.

But in Europe, absolutely everyone is needed, and with the likes of Reo Hatate out, that’s not the case and it hurts the team.

However, when it comes to the transfer window, surely more can be done.

Not spend £50 million on a winger or a midfielder. But just push the boat out, which in tune helps the team in Europe, or else, expect more of the same in 12 months.
