Garth Crooks has told West Ham that instead of sacking David Moyes, they should invest more money into his team, following the 6-0 defeat to Arsenal at the London Stadium.
The BBC pundit admitted that the magnitude of the defeat would kickstart talks over Moyes’ future among fans, but despite the result, suggested they should help the boss rather than get rid of him.
Crooks’ calls for further investment seem bizarre given the summer transfer spend at West Ham, but the lack of a natural striker has been noticeable at the London Stadium in recent weeks.
Writing in his BBC Sport Team of the Week column, Crooks shared: “I don’t think I’ve seen a West Ham side capitulate quite so badly.
“A defeat of this magnitude – 6-0 at home – will reignite the issue amongst their fans as to whether David Moyes is the right man to take the Hammers forward. I think a little investment in the team might be a better idea.”
It is no secret that West Ham need a new striker. They needed one in the summer, they needed one in January, and they still need one now. To that extent, Moyes has been let down by the club.
Links to the likes of Armando Broja, Santiago Gimenez and Victor Boniface in January eventually came to nothing, with Michael Antonio and Danny Ings remaining the only recognised striker in Moyes’ squad.
As a result, their attacking play has been nullified by the lack of a focal point, particularly when they faced an injury crisis concerning their other attacking players, but it is not an adequate excuse for the poor attacking football the Hammers have displayed in recent weeks.
David Moyes has largely had a successful second spell in charge of West Ham United but things have taken a turn for the worse now.
It’s not just results that have led to calls for Moyes’ head, but the brand of football on show, with a lack of attacking intent, particularly against the bigger sides boring fans in the stands and while it may get results, the supporters are not pleased.
