David Moyes has “done all he can” at West Ham United and it would be a “smart move” for the Scotsman to leave the London Stadium at the end of the season, according to Chris Sutton.
The Hammers put in their worst performance of the season on Sunday (11 February) as Arsenal ran riot in East London to beat Moyes’ Irons 6-0, with a 25-yard screamer from Declan Rice the biggest blow for supporters.
While Sutton thinks Moyes deserves plenty of credit for the “phenomenal” job he’s done during his time at the London Stadium, the BBC Sport pundit thinks it may be best for him to walk away with his head held high.
Speaking on the It’s All Kicking Off! podcast (12 February, 12:55) he said: “I think he’s done a phenomenal job, maybe the smart move would be for him to step down as you’ve said.
“West Ham can employ a manager and it’s fantasy football again and guess what they do, get David Moyes back for a third time to save the club from relegation. There seems to be a portion of the support who are just not having the brand of football and that seems to be the issue.
“He’s overachieved at West Ham, it will be interesting to see what happens, whether this new contract happens and whether he ends up signing it. But in all respects, he’s probably done all he can at West Ham hasn’t he?”
As Sutton suggested, across his tenure Moyes has managed to transform West Ham from a relegation-threatened club to European contenders, but it does feel like the Scotsman may have run his course.
Sunday’s performance and display was as bleak as any most supporters would have witnessed at the London Stadium and the manner in which the Irons capitulated defensively was absolutely embarrassing.
While one week doesn’t define a season, this is the latest in a series of poor results and displays that the Hammers have produced since news emerged about Moyes’ potential contract extension.
At this point in time, the Irons’ board cannot afford to hand the Scotsman a new deal beyond the end of this term and, quite frankly, Moyes has been rather fortunate to avoid more pressure for that poor display.
