Kalvin Phillips ‘devastated’ after what happened in West Ham

Kalvin Phillips was “absolutely devastated” after West Ham lost to Manchester United last week, according to first-team coach Kevin Nolan.

West Ham were on the end of a 3-0 loss at Old Trafford on 4 February in which Manchester City loanee Phillips was a second-half substitute.

Not only did the Irons fall to a pretty heavy defeat, Phillips also made an error for one of the goals for the second match running.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live’s The Friday Football Special [9 February, 19m 32s], Nolan said: “Kelvin’s such a lovely lad.

“He was given a couple of howler passes if I’m being honest. What we’ve got to do is get him up to speed as quickly as possible.

“He’s getting better every day and wants to work. After that Manchester United game he was absolutely devastated being a Man City player

“But also because of the way it had gone about. You can see he’s a top player by the way he’s bounced back in training.”

Phillips has not made the best of starts to his West Ham career since arriving on a four-month loan deal from Man City.

The England midfielder messed up early on during his debut against Bournemouth and was caught in possession for one of Man United’s goals.

Phillips has started just three Premier League games since the start of last season and it is clear to see he is still a little rusty.

West Ham paid a fair amount to bring the 28-year-old to London Stadium and David Moyes will be eager to get him into his side.

David Moyes will be eager to get Manchester City loanee Kalvin Phillips up to full speed in a West Ham United shirt as soon as possible

After a week on the training ground, it may well be that Phillips is selected to start this weekend’s clash with Arsenal.

Bringing Phillips on against Man United was a decision that Ian Wright slammed as he argued it only makes it tougher to get in the game.

It sounds as though Phillips has been impressing on the training ground, so let’s just hope he can transfer that to the field against Arsenal.
