Lucas Digne could return to Aston Villa squad to face Man Utd

Unai Emery has no fresh injury concerns ahead of Aston Villa’s crunch Premier League match with Manchester United on Sunday, while Lucas Digne could return to the squad.

Pau Torres was named in the matchday squad against Chelsea on Wednesday after overcoming an ankle injury which he aggravated twice since first sustaining the problem in mid-December. He hasn’t started a league game since Villa’s 2-1 win over Brentford eight weeks ago.

Nicolo Zaniolo also returned against Chelsea and came off the bench in the final minutes of the 3-1 defeat after missing the trip to Bramall Lane through injury. Digne has been training this week at Bodymoor Heath after suffering a hamstring injury on Boxing Day.

Digne came off early in the second half of Villa’s 3-2 defeat at Old Trafford, when Unai Emery’s side were leading by two goals. Alejandro Garnacho’s double put the Red Devils on level terms before Rasmus Hojlund completed the comeback late on.

United have won 17 of their 28 Premier League away games against Villa – only the Red Devils themselves (19 against Everton) have beaten an opponent on the road more often in the competition.

A win for Villa this weekend will open up an 11-point cushion on United, but if Erik ten Hag’s side are victorious at Villa Park then the gap will be cut to just five points. Ahead of the clash, Emery gave a team news update. He said: “The players who had injuries are recovering, like Lucas, Torres.”
