Why Morgan Rogers is not in Aston Villa’s new 25-man squad

Morgan Rogers was Aston Villa's biggest January signing

After the closure of the January transfer window, each Premier League club confirms their two squad lists. The 25-man squad contains no more than 17 players who do not fulfil the “home grown player” (HGP) criteria. The rest of the squad, up to a total of 25 players, must be “home grown”.

There’s also an additional list of each club’s registered under-21 players who are eligible over and above the squad limit of 25 players. Villa added two players to Unai Emery’s first-team squad in the January window, Morgan Rogers and Joe Gauci, while Kosta Nedeljkovic and Lino Sousa will link up in pre-season.

Gauci is the only addition to Villa’s 25-man squad because Rogers, who won’t turn 22 until the season is finished, is classed as an under-21 and has been listed among the likes of fellow first-teamers Jhon Duran, Kaine Kesler-Hayden and Tim Iroegbunam. Bertrand Traore and Leander Dendoncker have been removed from the squad after they left the club in the January window.

Here is the squad in full…

Aston Villa 25-man squad: Martinez*, Olsen, Gauci, Cash*, Carlos, Konsa*, Mings*, Lenglet, Digne, Torres, Moreno, Chambers*, Luiz, Kamara, McGinn, Tielemans, Buendia , Diaby, Zaniolo, Bailey, Ramsey*, Watkins*.
